WELCOME TO
THE BILLY D'ETTORRE & FRIENDS MUSIC SHOW
FAN PAGE

Saturday Mornings 10a-12n

Studio: 222-4FOX

Hi...I'm the "new guy"
Hi....My name is Billy D'Ettorre, and on May 7th, 2008 I became "the new guy" on 95.1 The Fox, hosting "The Billy D'Ettorre and Friends Music Show".  Many of you may be familiar with me, but some of you might be wondering who I am and where I came from.  I'll try and tell you a little bit about myself.

I was born and raised right here in Rochester, NY and from the time I was old enough to turn the dial I was fascinated with radio.  First, there was all that great (and not so great) music that somehow made it's way through the air and came out of the little speaker of my Superman transitor.  Even more amazing was the fact that people got paid to talk about the music and other stuff.  I still remember being a little kid and telling my parents "I want to talk on the radio when I grow up."
Can you believe it actually happened?

In the early 90's I was working in a stockroom at a local factory and listening to Brother Wease, like I did everyday, when he mentioned that he was looking for interns to help out on his show.

For those of you that aren't sure what interns are they are unpaid assistants, but benefit by gaining experience in their field of interest, and usually school credit.
No school credit for me though... I just wanted to be in a radio station working for the guy that had been entertaining me for years.  I arranged my work schedule so that I could go to the station a couple days a week to work on Wease's show, and with a combination of hard work, and a weird personality that kind of stuck out, I became a regular paid member of his staff.

I started as phone screener... then I was an assistant producer... then the executive producer... and then management decided I wasn't very good at my job, and they fired me (but let's not dwell on that).

I went back to factory work, but stayed on the radio because even though I was no longer on the Mon-Fri. morning show, I still got to be part of the music show Wease and I had been doing every Saturday for the past few years.  I'm very proud to say that these were considered by many to be the best 2 hours of music on Rochester radio, entertaining listeners throughout Western NY with our eclectic mix of rock, blues, folk, soul, country, reggae, and whatever else we felt like playing.

That same show now continues here on 95.1 The Fox, with me all alone (for now)... but I'm really not flying completely solo.  I have you, my friends, the listeners here to help me.  Please feel free to email me here on my website, or call me on Saturdays from 10am- noon at 222-4FOX and give me your comments and requests.

I still have so much to tell you about myself... stuff that doesn't have to do with my radio career, personal stuff, funny stuff, weird stuff, stuff I like, stuff I dislike, and even more stuff than that.  Well, ya know what?  Hopefully I'll be at The Fox for a long time, so I'm gonna keep a little blog right here, and anytime I feel like I've got some thoughts to share, and things I want to tell you about, this is where I'm gonna do it.  Check back often, and if I go too long without any new posts call or email me, tell me to stop being so lazy and put up something new.

Thanks again for listening to The Billy D'Ettorre and Friends Music Show.

The weirdest coincidence ever!!

On this weekend's edition of the "Billy D'Ettorre and Friends Music Show" I closed the program with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band doing a live cover of the 60's classic  "Mountain Of Love" (most famously recorded by Johnny Rivers).  This performance by The Boss and his band was from 12/31/75, and was the last time they did that song in concert.... until about 10 hours after I played in on the radio.  That's right!  On 8/23/08... almost 33 years since the last time they performed it.... Bruce and the boys rocked an ecstatic crowd in St. Louis, Missouri with this more than rare treat.
Am I a little psychic?  Is Mr. Springsteen as big a fan of mine as I am of his?  Does he check out my show every week by going to www.fox951.com and clicking the "Listen Live" button?  Hey Bruce, if you're reading this I'd love for you to do the old Elvis tune "(Won't Ya) Wear My Ring Around Your Neck" like you used to.  I can dream, can't I?

Last Sunday Morning I was listening to The Acoustic Storm on The Fox (every Sunday morning 8-11am) and host Jeff Parets played a song I've always loved... "Chestnut Mare" by The Byrds.  I mentioned this to a friend and we wound up debating the meaning of the lyrics.
She thought the the story was a metaphor for a guy persuing an unattainable woman.  I guess I'm just naive, but I never thought of it as anything but a song about a boy chasing a horse.  I talked about it on the show this week, and asked for opinions and theories from the listeners.  Some agreed with me, and other callers were wrong, but I'd like to know what you think too.  Give me a call some Saturday morning at 222-4FOX (222-4369), or drop me a line right through this website.  If you don't know the song, or want a refresher, check it out here:
Actually my favorite listener provided theory was that the song documents the singers struggle with heroin... after all, "horse" is slang for the evil drug.  I'm gonna catch that horse if I can (or maybe not)

Thanks to everyone for putting up with my love/fascination/creepy borderline obsession with my all time favorite recording artist, the King... Elvis Presley.  I had an even bigger ball doing the show this week than usual, and wish I could've done another 2... or 4... or 6 hours.  It would've been easy.
I'm very proud of the fact that even though most of the August 16th program had the Elvis theme I was still able to provide the eclectic mix of rock, blues, folk, soul, and country that the show is known for, and especially appreciate all of the positive feedback I received from your phone calls this morning.
If you didn't enjoy this weekends edition of the Billy D'Ettorre and Friends Music Show... well then I apologize, and you'll be happy to know that it won't happen again (until the next time Elvis' birthday, January 8th, or death day wind up on a Saturday).
Just be glad I didn't decide to prove that I could recite all 33 Elvis movies in chronological order, and the names of the characters he played.  I'll just assume I'm the only one who'd know the difference between his role as Tulsa McLean... America's singingest, lovingest, fightingest army soldier... in the lighthearted musical comedy "GI Blues", and his portrayal of Charlie Rogers... America's fightingest, singingest, lovingest carnival worker... in the humorous musical  "Roustabout".

Who says that you can't get anything for free?  I'm a big fan of the band Counting Crows, and I might have signed up for email alerts from their website at some point (I'm not sure), or maybe they're tracking me because I bought tickets to the upcoming Darien Lake concert, but I have been given something in return for my fandom and want to pass it on to you too.

Like many bands nowadays (Allman Bros., Barenaked Ladies, Grateful Dead, etc...) you can buy and download every show the band performs directly from groups, and Counting Crows is the latest to join the trend.  I got an email from them telling that their new website is open at www.livecountingcrows.com and if you are among the first 10,000 visitors to register you can download the 7/28/08 from Charlotte, NC for free... zero... gratis... nada... well you get the point.  So if you are a fan of Adam Duritz and the boys, or your unfamiliar with them and want to check them out, or even if you hate them but can't resist a good deal, go get it while you can.
